The worlds of Brookside and Hollyoaks are set to collide once again, as fan-favourites Tim ‘Tinhead’ O’Leary makes a dramatic return and wastes no time causing chaos in the village… and someone’s bedroom.
Philip Olivier reprises his iconic role as Tinhead, arriving in Chester alongside sister-in-law Nikki Shadwick (Suzanne Collins) who strikes up an unexpected friendship with Hollyoaks stalwart Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe), while Thomas ‘Sinbad’ Sweeney (Michael Starke) is also back behind the wheel of his black cab.
Tinhead first appeared in Brookside in 1996 before becoming a full-time resident of the Close a year later. He remained on the soap until its final episode in November 2003, leaving behind a turbulent legacy that included a near-fatal accident involving sister Melanie, a deep friendship with Sinbad, and a descent into crime that ultimately led to the death of his wife Emily during a botched robbery.
Given his enduring popularity, Olivier was among a select group of former Brookside stars invited to reprise their roles for a special crossover episode of Hollyoaks, which aired as part of the show’s 30th anniversary celebrations in 2025. The crossover was fitting, with both soaps having been created by Sir Phil Redmond.
The episode concluded with Tinhead casting a flirtatious eye over troubled newcomer Marie Fielding (Rita Simons), who has recently purchased a house on the legendary Liverpudlian estate.
Michael Starke appeared on Brookside across two stints between 1984 and 2000, first turned up in Hollyoaks in 2021 as taxi driver ‘Benny’. No explanation was ever offered for the name change and now, he’s proudly Sinbad once again.
In upcoming Hollyoaks scenes, Liberty Savage (Jessamy Stoddart) is left floating on air after meeting a potential new love interest, her first real shot at romance since her controversial fling with her half-sister Sienna’s murderous father, Jez. That man? Tinhead.
However, all is not quite as it seems. Tinhead appears to have an ulterior motive for being in Chester and secrets are already beginning to surface.
Elsewhere, the 2026 trailer teases the arrival of newcomer Jenson, played by Waterloo Road and Coronation Street actor Ryan Clayton, who shares a flirtatious moment with Mercedes before later clashing with Tinhead, who appears to be using Warren Fox’s identity.
Nikki also begins to bond with Mercedes at a local rehabilitation facility, while Donny Clark (Louis Emerick), aka Mick Johnson, seeks to flee the village following his Christmas split from Misbah Maalik. Still traumatised after a sexual assault last year, Donny turns to old friend Sinbad for help.
Speaking about her return, Suzanne Collins said:
“I couldn’t believe my luck when I saw Nikki has a friendship with the iconic Mercedes. I’m a huge fan of Jen, always have been. She’s an incredible actress. The response to the crossover was so warm and positive. I’ve been sworn to secrecy, but since finding out Nikki was returning, I’ve been floating around on cloud nine with the biggest secret smile on my face.”
Philip Olivier added:
“I’m so happy to be back in the building. Tinhead’s got a new fling this time around but he’s also got some unfinished business lurking in the background.”
Hollyoaks is available to watch on catch-up on Channel 4 and airs Monday to Wednesday on E4.
